Critque of Photography

1. Describe the objects in the image
A wash of blue and strings of light and color.
2. Analyze the technical, design, and perceptual functions.
Technical- The rule of thirds is used here in an interesting way as seen in the image below.  The string of light in the upper left corner intersects right at a corner point.  There are several other interesting intersections as seen below.
Design- The composition is good.  The colors have a good value range and the strings of light have excellent color range.

Perceptual- The photo almost looks like water.

3. Interpret the meaning of the image
It has an elegance and beauty as an image.  As it is calming as the colors fall into the lower right corner.
4. Value the image.
I think that the image is successful.  The color is beautiful, the composition is very good, and the strings of light add to the image.

Classmate's Series Success

The following photos are by Kristin at http://kristin0122.tumblr.com/.  Her series is on the use of macro photography while using a 35 mm lens.  At first, she was trying to have a variety of subjects, but she has begun to focus on flowers and bright colors.  These are the latest from her shoot.

Which Ones to Include?

During class, I was trying to cut down my series to 10 instead of 11.  After I had chosen 10, I changed the way I was looking at them.  First, I turned them all portrait.

Then, I turned them landscape.

Finally, I had some of them turned portrait and some turned landscape.
I haven't decided which way I'm going to use.  I am leaning toward using all portrait or the mixture of portrait and landscape.

Potential Final Series

The following photos are the ones that I have edited out for my final series.  Enjoy!!

Critque of Photography

The following image is by Kristin at http://kristin0122.tumblr.com/.  Enjoy!
1. Describe the objects in the image.A yellow flower against a gray and black background.

2. Analyze the technical, design, and perceptual aspects.
Technical- The rule of thirds is used nicely here.  Also the depth of field is strong, even though it is extremely limited.

Design- The thing that draws me to this photo is the color and the background.  The yellow flower is pretty, but I love the way that the background is several different colors.  It almost looks like a gradient.  I really think that the background makes the photograph strong.

Perceptual- The photograph feels like a flower.  However, it has a sense of peace.  The flower is very soft and delicate.

3. Interpret the meaning.
I'm really sure what the meaning is.  Like mentioned above, I think that the flower feel is very prominent, but I think that the photograph also has a surreal, delicate feeling.

4. Value the image.
I think that the image is strong because of the color and composition.

More Final Series Photographs

Here are some more of my final series photos.  Enjoy!!

Critique of Photography

This photo is from my final series.
1. Describe the objects in the image.
There are three groups of silver.  They are separated by a line of black.  Inside the groups of silver there are small strands of silver and gold.
2. Analyze the technical, design, and perceptual functions.
Technical- The rule of thirds is used in the photo as seen below.  I think that the use is successful.  Depth of field is not really applicable in the photo.

Design- The colors are brilliant.  I think that the dividing lines of black add to the photo.  The lines in the silver group aren't distracting, but at to the photo.
Perceptual-We perceive different groups of silver and light.  Someone in my class said that it felt like it was going to blow up.
3. Interpret the meaning of the image
The image is exciting and different.  Another person in my class said it looked like Christmas angels.

4. Value the image.
I think that the image is successful.  The composition is strong, and it is interesting.

The following image is by Chelsey.
For her project, she is capturing elegance in lighting in nature.
1. Describe the objects in the image.
The leaves are highlighted by the light giving off an olive color to the photo.
2. Analyze the technical, design, and perceptual functions.
Technical- The Rule of Thirds is strong in this photo.  The leaves intersect the points nicely as seen below.  The depth of field also adds to the strength of the photo.
Design- The lighting and color of the photo is very beautiful.  The different shapes in the background add interest and help make the photo more dynamic.

Perceptual- We perceive the delicate lighting.  I think that the photo has a beautiful delicate feel.

3. Interpret the meaning of the image.
As stated before,  she is capturing elegance in nature lighting.  That definitely comes across in the photo.

4. Value the image.
I think that this is a very successful image.  The composition is good, and the lighting strengthens the photo.

Photograph Critique

This entry will be about analyzing two of my classmates' photos and one of mine.

The following photo is taken by Colete at http://twirler11.tumblr.com/

1. Describe the objects in the image
The red flower is placed in the upper left corner against a green leaf.
2. Analyze the technical, design, and perceptual functions.

Technical-I think there are two technical aspects of the photo that are successful.  First the use of the rule of thirds.  The middle of the flower is right at an intersection point as seen in the photo below.  Also I think that the placing of the flower in the upper corner makes the photo stronger.  The second technical aspect is the use of depth of field.  The composition is strong and well balanced by the in-focus flower against the out of focus background.

Design-Again I think that the composition is strong.  Also another aspect that adds to the composition is the shapes of brown in the upper right and lower right corners.  These different shapes give balance to the photo.

Perceptual- We perceive sharp edges and wet leaves.  The flower is placed against its contrasting colors.

3. Interpret the meaning of the image
I'm not really sure of the meaning.  I get the feeling of a wet flower.
4. Value the image.
The photo is very nice.  The composition is strong, and the colors are beautiful.  I think this photo is successful.

The following photo is by Shariah at http://nungessersphoto.tumblr.com/

This week, Shariah brought in her photos in black and white as well as color.

1. Describe the objects in the image
A purple leaf with water drops against a green background.
2. Analyze the technical, design, and perceptual functions.
Technical- The use of depth of field is successful.  The water drops are very sharp and stand out on the leaf.  Also the use of the rule of thirds is successful where the leaf intersects the lines as seen below.
Design- In color, the design is dominated by the variants of purple.  I think that the color is beautiful, but we lose part of the beauty when we are distracted by the strong purple.  I think the black and white adds to the photo because it helps you focus more on the texture and shape aspects of the photo.

Perceptual-We perceive different colors of purple in the color photo.  We perceive shapes and different value ranges in the black and white photo.  I think that the black and white photo has a strength that the color photo lacks.
3. Interpret the meaning of the image.
The black and white photo has a surreal feeling.  The color photo communicates purple leaf with water.

4. Value the image.
I think that both of the images are beautiful.  I think that the black and white photo has a beauty that looks like glass.
